Ülkemizde üniversitelere giriş öğrencilerin ilgi, yetenek ve istekleri doğrultusunda olmamakta, sınavdan aldıkları puanlar doğrultusunda yaptıkları tercihlere göre yerleştirilmektedirler. Kimi zaman öğrenciler kendilerini bilmedikleri, isteyerek gelmedikleri bir bölümde ve çevre içinde bulmaktadır. Oysa gençlerin çevrelerindeki mekân kullanımları kişilik gelişimleri açısından önemlidir ve toplumun genelinden farklıdır. Bunun nedeni gençlerin çevresel tercihlerinin farklılığıdır. Bu tercihler ve farklılıklar özellikle vakitlerinin çoğunun geçtiği kampüs tasarımlarına yansımalıdır. Bu nedenle çalışmada Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Kanuni kampüsü açık mekânları ele alınmıştır. Gençlerin kampüs açık mekânlarını nasıl kullandıkları, mekânsal öğe ve bileşenleri hangi etkinliklere olanaklı buldukları araştırılmıştır. Diğer bir deyişle, etkinlikleri gerçekleştirebilmeleri için kampüs açık mekânlarının sahip olması gereken olanaklılıkların belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla kampüsteki açık mekânlarda davranış gözlemi yapılmıştır. Kamera kayıtları daha sonra çözümlenerek davranışlar şemalaştırılmış, mekânsal öğeler ve olanaklar açısından açık mekânlar irdelenmiştir.

Universities in our country are not oriented towards the interests, talents and desires of the students who are admitted, they are placed according to the preferences they make in the direction of the points they get from the examination. Sometimes students find themselves in an environment where they do not know themselves, do not come willingly. However, the use of space in the environment of young people is important in terms of personality development and is different from the society in general. The reason for this is the difference in the environmental preferences of youth. These preferences and differences are especially reflected in campus designs where the majority of their time is spent. For this reason, open spaces of the Karadeniz Technical University Kanuni campus were considered in the study. It has been researched how youth use campus open spaces, what spatial factors and components they find possible. In other words, it is aimed to determine the possibilities of campus open spaces so that they can perform activities. For this purpose, observations were made on open spaces in the campus. Camera records were analyzed and open spaces were analyzed in terms of spatial characteristics and possibilities schematized.
