SİYASAL İLETİŞİMDE FLIP-FLOP (SİYASİ TAKLA) KULLANIMININ SEÇMENLERCE ANLAMLANDIRILMASI

Murat BAŞARIR1 , Esra Yıldırım2

HOW VOTERS INTERPRET THE USE OF FLIP-FLOPS IN POLITICAL COMMUNICATION

Murat BAŞARIR1 , Esra Yıldırım2

This study examines how voters interpret the "flip-flop" phenomenon, a term used in political communication literature to describe sudden changes in politicians' discourse, ideological stances, and policies, and how this interpretation process interacts with political thought. The study also aims to examine in depth how voters react to the changes that have been implemented and the differences in evaluation norms between voters who have and have not exhibited such attitudinal changes in their own lives. Accordingly, the research was designed within the framework of qualitative research methodology; data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings of a qualitative study conducted with thirty participants revealed that the flip-flop phenomenon is perceived by voters not merely as an indicator of rational inconsistency, but as a process with moral, emotional, and strategic components. It also shows that maintaining consistency between discourse and action by political actors is critical not only from an ethical standpoint but also for the sustainability of political trust and legitimacy.
